8 THINGS ONE YEAR OF BLOGGING HAS TAUGHT ME

January 14, 2019

YOU CAN’T PLEASE EVERYONE
I’ve learnt if you set out to please everyone in life you are honestly just setting yourself up for failure. When you put yourself out there on social media there are going to be people who just don’t get what you do and that’s something many of us have had to come to terms with and I’m ok with it. I started blogging because I love it and that will always be why I do it and if people don’t like that, then that’s their opinion and I won’t let it bring me down. I relate a lot to Lady Gaga’s “There can be 100 people in the room, and 99 don’t believe in you but just one does”. We need to focus on the people that do believe in us and not give rise to those who don't.

WE ALL NEED A BREAK
When social media and Instagram especially, is such a big part of your life, sometimes you just need a break. It’s important to remember that Instagram will always be there when you come back but life doesn’t wait for anyone and sometimes you just need to be present and do you. Taking a break now and then from social media can be great, especially if I’m feeling down, I just need to focus on myself and not be worrying about dressing to the nines for another outfit picture when I just want to lie in my pj’s and binge Netflix and that’s the beauty of Instagram Vs. Reality.

I’TS OK NOT TO BE OK
So this little one stems from a post I wrote back in November, called ‘It’s Ok Not To Be Ok’. It’s my most read post on my blog to date and the response I got from it was amazing. Mental health is not something I talk a lot about in my day to day life and I only tell my close family and friends about my struggle. So to come out in front of some many people and talk about this was scary to say the least. But the response and love I got from it made it so worthwhile and I’m so glad a lot of people could relate to my story and feel like they aren’t alone.

CHANGE IS GOOD AND I’M HERE FOR IT
I’ve always been the type of person who is afraid of change but this year has taught me that change is good and I’m embracing it. Starting blogging itself was a huge change for me and it has honestly turned out to be the best decision of my life. Every change I have made recently in my life has been for the better and I feel so happy with where I am at the minute. And of course I can’t forget changing my Instagram theme, although this sounds ridiculous – this was such a big decision for me. I felt like my all white, cool toned aesthetic was what defined me but after a while I just knew it was time for a change and although I was so scared about it I’m completely embracing my new warm toned Instagram theme (I’ve never looked so tanned) and if I want to change it again I will.

IT’S NOT A NUMBERS GAME
Ugh Follower Numbers where do I even start? Blogging/Influencing is known for being about how many followers you have however for me and a lot of other bloggers it’s just not. It’s about the creativity, the friendships and just enjoying what you do. Whilst it can feel great to reach a big personal milestone like 1k or 10k, it’s not what it’s all about. When I look back at my highlights of my first year of blogging they aren’t reaching whatever number of followers or likes, they are the moments and experiences I’ve had and the people I’ve met. So just remember this if you ever feel like you aren’t growing enough or you didn’t get enough likes, keep doing what you love. (Oh and don’t buy fake followers)

YOU CAN’T DO IT ALL, BUT YOU CAN DO SOME AND DO IT WELL
When you first start blogging it can be easy to accept every opportunity or event invitation that comes your way. But I’ve learnt that it is ok to say no to things. If I know I won’t be able to commit my full time and effort into doing something I won’t do it. It’s all about quality rather than quantity and I would rather do one brand collab and be 100% happy with what I produce than do 10 mediocre ones.

KINDNESS GOES A LONG WAY
This is honestly my main vibe for 2019 that people should be nicer on the internet. Commenting on someone’s photo or sending them a nice message can just make a person’s day and with so much negativity on the internet, I think it’s super important to spread the love, especially if you love someone’s content. I love seeing bloggers supporting bloggers especially cause we know those algorithms can try to play us and so it’s great to have that mutual love and support.

AMAZING OPPORTUNITIES WILL COME YOUR WAY WHEN YOU LEAST EXPECT THEM
I have been given so many amazing opportunities since I started blogging and I am so grateful for all of them, sitting here one year ago on this exact day I would never have imagined I would be where I am now. Obviously becoming Boux Avenue Ambassador has been a massive highlight and I’m still in awe that I’m working with such a huge brand that I love.

Thank you for reading
